Ricky Martin Review, 12/5/06 Print E-mail
Thursday, 18 May 2006
ricky martin reviewRicky Martin played to a packed bullring (!) at Plaza de Toros de Murcia on Friday 12th May. I have been a big fan of Ricky Martin for over 12 years but he was slung into notoriety since he sang "The Cup of Life" during the World Cup, France 98. The audience was mostly made up of young adults but there were also teenie boppers, housewives, grandma's and sheepish looking grandpa's who were obviously dragged along by their wives/grandchildren. Ricky appeared on stage at 10.15pm - only 15 minutes past the scheduled time - and from start to finish - nearly two hours - he sang, danced, meditated (must be something to do with his various trips to India) gyrated and of course shook his 'boom boom' much to the delight  and squeals of the audience.

Two large screens either side of the stage gave us close ups of the singer, musicians and dancers and would then cut into visuals of a Japanese dancer, Indian writings and symbols and scenes of Africa. The music was typical Latino with lots of sexy dancing and Ricky belted out old favourites such as "She Bangs", "Un, dos, tres"  and "Livin La Vida Loca" as well as Spanish songs from his latest album "Life". He injected jazz, soul, funk and yes even the Charleston. His eclectic taste blended in beautifully as he flowed from one rhythm to another and then back to Latino. His energetic dancing, gorgeous good looks and ability to work the audience made a fantastic show with excellent value for money.
