Tourist Driving Fine Scam Print E-mail
British holidaymakers heading for Spain and the Canary Islands were today warned about a fake fines scam. A Spanish company has been sending letters to tourists after they return home claiming they committed a traffic offence while on holiday and demanding payment of 129 euros (£86).

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT), which issued today’s warning, said the letter gave the appearance of being genuine but does not contain any specific details about the alleged violation.

The documents have been sent by a company called DRAYES (Deuda Recuadar Alguacil Y Exigir Servicios) which claims to be acting on behalf of the Justice Departments of Spain and Gran Canaria.

On top of the fine, the letter demands an additional sum for court hearing costs and administration.

Penny Boys, executive director of the OFT, said: “This is a very convincing scam: the content and presentation of the demand letters combined with the fact that most recipients have recently visited the destinations, makes it easy to understand how people could fall for these fraudulent claims.

“However, anyone receiving these letters should not send any money.

“If you believe you may have committed a driving offence whilst on holiday in Spain you should contact the Spanish authorities.”
