Deaths on the road go up as does drunk driving |
In July the number of deaths on the roads in the province of Alicante rose to 15 – the average for the rest of the year is 8.5. However the 15 deaths are slightly lower than the previous year when it was 17.
Almost certainly related to this is the amount of drink and driving that goes on as a normal part of life. From January to April this year the Guardia Civil carried out 11,136 breath tests of which 1,218 were positive that is 11% and this despite a very strong campaign against drunk driving. The situation is getting worse the percentage last year for the same period was 7%.
The number of deaths of people under the age of 30 has also risen. Powerful cars from good salaries combined with alcohol and drugs are a deadly mixture. The statistics also point to the fact that at the weekend the situation is considerably worse. Over a third of all accidents occur on Saturday or Sunday. |
