Big losses from Power Cuts in Altea |
|
|
In what has become an annual event the bars and restaurants of Altea were left without electricity for 2 hours last night.
The power cut took place from 11:30 until 1:30 in the morning. This meant that 54 bars and restaurants could not serve dinner to about 300 clients. The resulting loss was therefore approximately 30,000 euros.
The village is used to power cuts sometimes for just a second or two but more often of 2 or 3 hours in the summer. The problem is that there is excess demand for the power supplied and the transformers can not cope with it.
The restaurant owners had already made a call to Iberdrola, the company responsible for electricity in Altea earlier last night when a whining sound was heard from one of the transformers in the Old Town. Iberdrola however chose to ignore the issue until it was too late.
In Finestrat, Gata de Gorgos and Teulada the story is repeated with similar losses. Last year major parts of Benidorm were without electricity during the day which meant all the shops closing. The route cause is a lack of infrastructure in high and medium tension cables all over the Costa Blanca. Rapid growth in tourism and housing has left a power deficit. |
