In Spain, every year, there are many festivals of Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians), all different and with original celebrations. Villajoyosa’s stands out as one of the most spectacular and has been considered as international tourist interest for the uniqueness of its landing. It is worth setting up your alarm clock early or joining the party!
The fishing village of Villajoyosa is the place to be to enjoy this festival commemorating the events of 1538 when Berber pirates led by Zalé-Arraez tried to attack the town. The legend says that St. Martha (Santa Marta) rescued the Christians by causing a flash flood that ended with the pirates’ fleet. The people from Villajoyosa grateful to Santa Marta made her the patron saint of their town and since then, celebrate this festival in her honour.
The processions of Moros y Cristianos open up the festivities, marching around the town to the sound of music. The Moors on the evening of the 25th July, the Christians on the evening of the 26th. Then, in the early hours of the 28th of July, the landing is held. If you want a good place, plan on arriving to the beach at around 5 in the morning, and watch the Christians getting their artillery ready. Over 30 Moorish vessels will soon approach the coastline and once landed, they will battle until they reach the castle. The Moors take the castle first and then, that same afternoon, the Christians will retake it and send the Moors symbolically back to sea.
There are many other activities and fun happening in La Vila these days. Fireworks, music concerts, gastronomic competitions, open-air dances,… Fun for all and some very special Spanish traditions.
