Muro de Alcoy Print E-mail

muro de alcoyThe Blue Dome of the Mountains

Muro is a small yet thriving town. It consists of the main town plus three attractive outlying suburbs, Turballos, Benamer and Setla de Nunyes.

The team from Alternative Spain bring to life the charms and beauty of this inland spot.

Famous for it’s textile industry, it also boasts a guitar manufacturer as well as manufacturers of ceramics, mouldings and frames. Agriculture is still undoubtedly an important element in this area, particularly the olive, almond and cherry crops.

Many people from the surrounding villages and countryside flock to Muro to make use of the facilities on offer; Branches of most major banks can be found here as well as a modern health centre, a variety of shops and supermarkets and post office. For those of us with young families, we are fortunate to have 2 good state schools as well as an ‘instituto’, equivalent of a secondary school/sixth form college. As for leisure facilities, a cinema, sports complex and of course, the compulsory public swimming pool are all on offer.

Muro is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, namely the ‘Benicadell’ range and the ‘sierra Mariola’ natural park, famous for it’s rich variety of aromatic and medicinal plants. For those of you who enjoy trekking, or ‘senderismo’ there are many exciting routes around the area- maps of which can be found at the local tourist office*. For the less energetic, there is an abundance of beautiful countryside where one can enjoy a leisurely stroll and take in the peace and tranquillity on offer.

The area is also famous for its gastronomy with many dishes based on its quality olive oil and herbs- “ La pericana” is a ratatouille type dish based on roasted onions, garlic and dried red peppers. “ Bajoques Farcides” peppers stuffed with rice and “patissos de boniato” pastries stuffed with sweet potato cream. These are just a few of the tempting dishes on offer.

With the ever increasing popularity of rural tourism, quality accommodation is not difficult to find; “Casas rurales” rural guest houses are often the accommodation of choice for the traveller in the know, often offering quality homemade traditional cooking. A list of accommodation can be found at the tourist office.
