Murcia Going Even Greener
16 October 2006

A new report suggests that Murcia will lead the way in renewable energy.

WindfarmThe report was presented by Director General of Murcia region’s Department of Industry, Mr Horacio Sánchez Navarro. I his speech he recognized that at present on approximately 70 megawatts of energy came from ‘green’ sources. These include wind farms and solar panels.

However, plans are afoot to increase this to 800 megawatts by 2012 using planned wind power alone. If all other windfarms and solar enegey sites are approved, then this number could reach nearly 3,000 megawatts.

To put these numbers in perspective, the city of Murcia needs approximately 300 megawatts of energy per year, and 3,000 megawatts would provide more than 30% of the region’s total needs.
