Speed Cameras Being Tried Out 16 October 2006
A pilot test is being carried out in Benidorm to assess the effectiveness of speed cameras.
In the UK, we are now used to having to watch our speed in case the dreaded speed camera flashes. Some say it is simply a way for the government to collect new taxes, whilst others claim it to be an important deterrent. Well now we may have to start thinking the same here on the Costa Blanca.
An electronic radar system linked to a camera has been set up near Benidorm train station to catch car drivers who run the red light. The radar system will detect the cars, calculate their speeds and send a signal to the camera to take a photo of the car’s driver.
At present this is only a trial, and no police action will result should you get caught. Indeed, the company who has installed the camera has said that it hopes that the mere presence of such technology will act a sufficient deterrent.
However, there has already been protests by group claiming this to be a violation of human rights. Also, in some quarters, criticism of local police has been increased where it is felt that they do little in preventing road crimes already!
Time will tell whether the dreaded yellow box will become a feature of our driving lives, but this reported suspects that the so-called march of progress is a one-way street!
