Spain Given 2 Months To Resolve Land Grab Law 17 October 2006
The European Commission has given Spain 2 months to resolve the Valencian “land grab” law.
The law was introduced so that individual land owners could not interfere with regional and town planning. However, the law has been continually abused by developers who have been able to force home owners to sell their homes at fractions of the market price. In other cases, land has been re-classified without the land owners knowledge, and home owners have been forced to pay for infrastructure such as roads and drains.
A UK MEP, Michael Cashman, has been championing the case in the European Parliament for some time and has forced the issue to a head. The EU has now demanded that the situation be resolved in 2 months. If there is no satisfactory outcome, the EU will take Spain the the European Court of Justice to force the resolution of the issue. Mr Cashman has said that this is a great example of the EU being elected by the people and working for the people to defend their fundamental rights in their homes.
