Elche Disco Worker Seriously Burned 24 October 2006
A man working in a discoteque in Elche received second and third degree burns whilst working.
The man was wearing a fancy dress costume and was employed to liven up the crowd and do some PR work for the disco. Witnesses said that for some reason the costume he was wearing caught fire, and within seconds had spread to the whole costume, engulfing the man in flames.
He received second and third degree burns to most of the lower part of his body. He was taken to Elche Hospital, but was later transferred to Alicante General Hospital for specialist treatment.
The cause of the fire is not known, but it is reckoned hat he got too close to either a cigarette or a candle. Safety will now be reviewed at the disco and it is not known if the owners will face liability action.
The incident serves to remind all of us that accidents can happen at any time without warning, and to take care at all times.
