More Desalination For Costa Blanca 27 October 2006
The Ministry for the Environment has announced a further desalination plant for the Costa Blanca.
As water resourced grow more and more scarce, the need for radical new approaches is necessary. Already, the construction of two large desalination plants has been approved in the area around Torrevieja.
Now, the Ministry for the Environment has announced a further desalination plant will be built in Denia. Construction will begin soon and is expected to be complete in 2008. It is hoped that that these desalination plants will ease the demand on natural water supplies locally and further afield. The Segura basin is already at record lows, and transfers from the Tajo and Ebra sources have been halted.
The cost of the desalination plant will be approximately 50 million euros (£35 million). It will be initially funded by central government. However, Denia municipality will have to repay the costs. To cover these costs, a new tax on new constructions will be imposed in order to avoid passing the costs on in water bills. |
