Local Hotel Escapes €12million Fine 30 October 2006
A hotel in Villajoiosa has escaped a €12million fine for illegally building more rooms than originally allowed.
The Atrium Beach Hotel in Vilajoiosa was built with an extra 11 stories which were not part of the approved plans. The Valencian government imposed a €12million (£9million) fine against the owners. However, the law also allows for fines to be reduced by 95% if legality can be established.
The hotel owners have been trying to get the build legalised for some time now, and its legality is almost certain to be restored. The local Partido Popular political party has revently approved a so-called 'reformed integrated plan” which would restore the hotel's legality.
It seems that this approach to hotel building is quite normal. In July this year, we reported that the Kaktus hotel on the beach at Albir faced demolition of its upper floors. A lengthy appeal was launched which allows the hotel to continue operating as normal.
