Senior Citizens Needs Not Being Met 1 November 2006
A recent report shows that residential homes for senior citizens are woefully lacking.
In 2001, the Genralitat de Valencia commissioned the building of 20 centres for the care of elderly people. Whilst some new homes have been built, it has been estimated that there is still a shortfall of about 40% of the beds promised. This translates into a shortfall of nearly 1,200 beds.
The most serious shortfalls are in Vega Baja area. Homes in Pilar, Torrevieja and Orihuela have not even been started. These homes should have offered shelter for 300 people. In the Marina Alta area, Benissa and Denia have been left short, whilst Benidorm and Crevillente are also affected.
Naturally, the issue has surfaced on the political agenda. The socialist party have severely criticised the management of the planned facilities. Specifically, they claim that work was sub-contracted against the original conditions set by the Generalitat. They have demanded a formal statement from the management but have been left waiting. |
