United Nations to Establish Key Site in Valencia 6 November 2006
The Spanish Prime Minister has announced that a strategic UN site will be established in Valencia.
Mr Zapatero was speaking at the 16th Ibero-American Summit in Uraguay at the end of last week when he made the announcement. The site will be a base for logistical support for UN peacekeeping missions. The activities will include advanced communications and other information technology based tasks.
Mr Zapatero committed 12million Euros to the project after a meeting with Kofi Annan, the general secretary of the UN. He went on to say that the investment demonstrated Spain commitment to world peace and the role of the United Nations.
The local economy will gain from the new site with at least 300 new jobs directly connected to the base.
