Rain Brings Relief 6 November 2006
The heavy rain on the Costa Blanca over the weekend has brought some relief to the water crisis on the Costa Blanca.
The heavy rain started around Friday lunchtime and continued well into the weekend. The intensity of the rain meant that on average, 50 litres per square metre fell in Alicante province. However, some areas had considerably more rain than others. Town in the north of the Costa Blanca suffered with Benidorm registering 90 litres per square metre. It was the heaviest rain on record for ten years.
Further afield, Benissa, Alfaz del Pi and Catral also saw approximately 100 litres per square metre.
Of course, this is all good news. Farmers saw their local reservoirs filling up and of course their crops received a welcome watering. It also meant that nearly 100 emergency wells could be closed.
However, the rain caused chaos as power was cut, and many building suffered. Places like LA Marina shopping centre had to restrict the use of elevators on safety grounds, and the soggy ceiling simply fell in. |
