Stricter Property Controls 13 November 2006
The clampdown on illegal rentals is gathering pace as the Guardia Civil receive new instructions.
For some time now, the Government has been clamping down on illegal property transactions. In its most severe case, many homes in Murcia face demolition for having been built illegally on protected land.
Now, in a move which focuses on the rental market, tough new rules have been issued to the Guardia Civil.
A register of rentals is being created in the Benidorm, Alicante, Marina Alta and Marina Baixa areas. Owners who rent their property will be obliged to provide police with a copy of their customers' passports or identity cards.
The reason given is to help police track members of organised crime gangs, though some will see this as yet another clapmdown on the private rental market. It is known that many millions of euros are handed over 'black' so that owners can get away without declaring tax, nor having to apply for the relavent licences. |
