Parcent Building Halted 13 November 2006
A court ruling has caused the building of 1500 homes near Parcent to be halted.
The buildings were part of the plans to increase the size of Parcent. Parcent is located in the Jalon valley to the north of the Costa Blanca. There have been a number of protests that the increase in the number of inhabitants is simply not viable. Specifically, water supplies would not be able to be guaranteed.
Now, in a move which is without precedent, the Valencian Supreme Court has listened to those protests and halted building for the same reason.
The local mayor will be protesting the ruling, but is umlikely to win.
The ruling has wider imlications with many other new housing projects coming under scrutiny. In neighbouring Murcia, 22000 homes are being built and again, water supplies are not guaranteed.
Greenpeace has already severely criticised building in the region saying it is damaging and unsustainable. It cites the building of more than 360,000 homes and 48 golf courses in its criticism. |
