Altea House Collapses

A house in Altea collapsed last week as a result of the recent rains.
 The house, which was located on the main N332 which runs through the town collapsed without warning. Fortunately, no-one was hurt.
Work had been going on to demolish an adjacent property which left the house unsupported and perhaps more importantly, the ground exposed. It is believed that all the recent rain softened the ground causing the collapse.
The owner of an electrical shop next door had a lucky escape. He heard the walls making a "funny noise" and notice water running down the walls. As he stepped outside to investigate further, the house and most of his shop collapsed.
Police and firecrews were quickly on the scene, and immediately set about verifying that there was no-one trapped in the rubble. Special search dogs were drafted in. Within an hour however, all people were accounted for and the threat of dead people passed.
The road was closed for some time causing considerable tailbacks as cars were diverted along the main shopping street in Altea. |
