New Hospital Opens - Finally! 23 November 2006
Torrevieja's new hospital has been officially opened, three years late!
The new hospital is considered to be a state-of-the-art facility, and was said to be "the most modern and best-equipped in Europe". The remarks came from hospital doctor, Snr Garcia Gea.
The opening ceremony was performed by Srn Francisco Camps, the regional president. After the opening formalities, Snr Camps toured the hospital, spending a while with many of the patients who have been admitted ahead of the official opening.
The hospital cost about 43 million euros (£30 million) to built and will include 250 beds, 90 private rooms and a digital radiology department. More than 200 doctors have already been appointed to the hospital which includes 30 non-Spanish speaking from as afar as Poland! The hospital should be able to handle nearly a million patients a year.
Snr Camps went on to say that the opening of the hospital fulfils his dream that no-one should live more than 30 minutes away from a hospital in the local community.
