Crime Report For Last Week 24 November 2006
In Alicante, an off-duty policeman shot a Polish man in a bar after the group of friends he was with became rowdy and aggressive. The policeman had asked the 3 poles to calm down and when he showed them his police badge, they punched him. He fired 2 warning shots to no effect so with his third shot, he wounded one of the men in the leg. All 4 including the policeman were subsequently arrested.
In Elche, a school bully has been interned after months of aggression towards another pupil. The victim had suffered greatly even having had fingers broken. Parents are considering a distancing order to protect their child. Since the attack, the victim is said to be traumatised and unable to return to school.
Four people were arrested in Alicante for internet crimes, including fraud, data theft and extortion. They had set up a virus to take over web-cams attached to the infected computers. Most of the victims were in educational institutions. The four recorded pupils in intimate situations and then blackmailed them into giving money.
In Albacete, the Guardia Civil concluded Operation Pedigree by arresting 2 people and seizing cannibis with a street value of more than 2 million euros. Whilst Albacete isn't here on the Costa Blanca, it seems sure that the majority of the cannibis was heading this way.
In Castilla last week, a man was shot dead in what police believe to be a settling of scores between drug organisations. Police found 2kg of cocaine at the crime scene along with equipment to manufacture ecstacy pills.
More in Elche where a bank robbery went embarassingly wrong for a would-be thief. He went into the bank brandishing a knife, but no-one took him seriously. In his frustration he started hitting doors and furniture, injuring himself in the process. He left the bank empty handed but was arrested within a few minutes!
Again in Elche, the mayor is facing a tough time trying to explain how he gained 11 million euros from land deals he was involved in. It seems that there has been the usual under-table dealings, with the Partido Popular trying to make political capital from the accusations.
In Murcia (not technically Costa Blanca but we cover it anyway!), a man was arrested after threatening to stab his former girlfriend and her 16 year old daughter. Both were pregnant, but neither hurt in the incident.
Back to Elche once more, where 5 Latin-Americans have alleged being brutally beaten and inhumanely treated by local police. However police have defended themselves saying that they were twice called to the plaza where the men were drinking to quieten things down and to break up fighting.
And finally, in order to fight all this crime more effectively, 76 new police officers will join local forces up and down the Costa Blanca. The officers are fresh out of 'police-school'. During the graduation ceremony, the Director General of the Poice force also announced that equipment spending was increasing by nearly 35%.
